What is Climbazole and How is it Used in Cosmetic Products?<\/h2>\n

Climbazole is an additive and antifungal agent used in over-the-counter shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and face washes to treat human fungal skin infections like eczema and dandruff. Dandruff is suffered by as much as half of the population and about one in every ten individuals in the United States will develop eczema during their lifetime. This agent helps to treat these moderate to severe fungal infections and their symptoms such as redness, and dry, itchy, and flakey skin without causing irritation to the affected area when used properly.<\/p>\n

Is Climbazole Safe?<\/h2>\n

In the use of cosmetic products with a maximum concentration of 0.5% Climbazole cannot be considered safe, but when it is used as a preservative in hair cosmetics and face cosmetics at 0.5%, it does not pose a risk to the health of the consumer. Climbazole is a stable acid with a neutral pH that ranges between pH 4-7 and has excellent light, heat and storage abilities.<\/p>\n

Is Climbazole more Effective when Combined with Zinc Pyrithione for Dandruff?<\/h2>\n

Though Climbazole is effective on its own, the addition of zinc pryithione can add to the shampoo\u2019s efficacy. Zinc pyrthione can inhibit the growth of yeast, which is a main factor in dandruff, and has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties that can work in conjunction with Climbazole.<\/p>\n

How do you Dissolve Climbazole?<\/h2>\n

Climbazole is soluble and can be dissolved in a small amount of rubbing alcohol, glycols, surfactants, and perfume oils, but it is insoluble in water. It also dissolves faster at elevated temperatures so using a warm solvent is recommended.<\/p>\n

Most dandruff problems are a result of fungus known as Malassezia that live on your scalp causing skin cells to multiply more quickly than usual. The most effective treatment is dandruff shampoo that delivers the anti-fungal agent directly to the scalp.<\/p>\n

Is Eczema a Fungus?<\/h2>\n

Eczema, also known as eczematous dermatitis, has many causes such as predetermined genetic allergens, but the most common is a bacterium know as Staphylococcus aureus. It can also provide entry points for infection making treatment even more difficult. Though eczema is normally not a fungus itself, inhibiting infection using an anti-fungal agent such as Climbazole can be the key to successful treatment of eczema.<\/p>\n

Why is Climbazole use Restricted in the EU?<\/h2>\n

In May 2019, the European Commission restricted the use of Climbazole in cosmetics. This restriction allows up to an authorized concentration of 0.5% in a finished product when used as a preservative and 2% in rinse-off shampoos when used as an anti-dandruff agent. This regulation was published to protect those in an aggregate exposure scenario while considering the safe concentration levels of Climbazole at 0.2% in face creams, hair lotion, and foot creams and at 0.5% in rinse-off shampoos.<\/p>\n
