Ticks
Woodticks are a common problem throughout the year, and they don’t go away completely until winter. These biting insects can cause problems for you, your dog or your cat. Canines are more likely to be bitten by ticks because they venture outside more frequently. However, if a tick rides home on your clothing, they could easily end up on your feline friend. Tufts University recommended cleaning your lawn of plant debris regularly to limit the number of ticks. Piles of rotting leaves and branches can create heat, attracting ticks and other pests to your yard.
Another preventative measure is using tick collars on your dogs when they stay outside for long periods of time. Also, using a broad-spectrum pesticide around the foundation of your home may prevent ticks and other pests from sneaking inside. Just remember to follow the direction on the label carefully and keep your pets away from the area until it’s safe.

Asian lady beetles
Not only can Asian lady beetles wreak havoc in your autumn garden and invade your home, but they can also cause trouble for your pets. According to The Weather Network, Asian lady beetles can actually enter your pets’ mouths and bite their soft tissue, causing redness, swelling, and ulcers. Generally, this is only a risk when there are large swarms of the beetles. But because these pests have very few natural predators in North America, populations tend to be high.
Homeowners can vacuum up Asian lady beetles found in the home, but the problem becomes more serious when they enter cracks in the home’s foundation or walls. In that case, the beetles usually have to be gassed, vacuumed out, and then the cracks must be sealed to prevent future infestations.
Mites
Both dogs and cats are highly susceptible to mites. These small arachnids can appear on your pet’s skin, fur and even in their ears. According to Merck Vet Manual, there are several different species of mites that can be harmful to dogs and cats. Some can cause itching, while others have more severe consequences such as hair loss and disease. Preventing these problems involves regularly cleaning your home and checking your animals for mites after a trip outdoors. If you notice your pet scratching itself or showing other signs of distress, it’s best to take them to the vet for a checkup.
Stay vigilant this autumn and watch out for ticks, beetles, and mites that could harm your pet. Prevention and regular pest management should keep your cats and dogs healthy and happy.
